For many years, the contemporary art scenes in Taiwan have always been in lack of a communicational platform which collects the achievement of individual art workers and introduce the vitality of Taiwan contemporary art to the world. Therefore in the year of 2007, the owner of Galerie Grand Siecle, Mr. Chang Hsueh-Kung, invited two other galleries- Aki Gallery and Dynasty Art Gallery – to start the alliance Taiwan Contemporary Art Link, with the execution of Ms. Huang Ya-Chi who later served as the first Chief Executive of TCAL. In the year of 2008, DerHorng Art Gallery joined as a new member in the alliance. The objective of such establishment is to adapt the form of strategic alliance among galleries, hence to collaboratively create visibility for young artists world-wide.
It has been three years since the establishment of the English website for the Contemporary Art Link in Taiwan (<span>www.taienacontemporaryart.net</span>), during the time, it is undoubtedly successful in communicating contemporary art of Taiwan to leading institutions of art and culture in every part of the world. The frequent contacts and communications collaborated with these institutions make Taiwan Contemporary Art Inc., realize: it always requires academic publication and the complement effect brought internet media and print publication to create instant communication of information. The owner of Dynasty Art Gallery, Mr. Frank C. Liu, thus initiates the project to publish a bilingual artist archive which included important figures in Taiwan contemporary art. We expect to compensate the insufficiency in academic publications related to Taiwanese contemporary art, with the editorship and issue of Art Island – an Archive of Taiwan Contemporary Artists in both Mandarin and English, and also, hope to collect as much knowledge of these representing figures of contemporary artists in Taiwan as possible from different points of view.
The completion of this publication owes to the support of National Council for Cultural Affairs Taiwan, along with many art spaces, galleries, and organizations such as Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Meanwhile, TCAL invites four scholars, art critics – Chen, Tai-Sung (lecturer in the Department of New Media Art at Taipei National University of the Arts), Hu, Fung-Fen (independent curator/ the honorable chairperson of the Association of the Visual Arts in Taiwan), Ku, Shih-Yung (professor in the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts), Wu, Chieh-Hsiang (assistant professor in the Department of Art at National Changhua University of Education) – to be our academic counselors. We also invited the Australia curator Sophie Mclntyre as the guest writer, offering readers an insight introduction. We feel grateful to those who have helped the completion of this book, and we hope the publication of this book will further promote Taiwan contemporary art to the greater public in each corner of the world.
If you would like to pursue the book, please connect the Taiwan Contemporary Art Link’ s committee through info@taiwancontemporaryart.net.
