電影《再生俠》的出現源自1992年同名漫畫，漫畫在五年間售出八千萬本，受歡迎程度不下於蜘蛛俠和蝙蝠俠。

故事講述美國特工艾西蒙不幸遭到謀殺，死後卻因為捨不得愛妻雲達，不惜與魔鬼交易，以地獄使者身份還陽轉世，務求再見雲達一面。還陽後，西蒙化身「再生俠」，擁有不死身軀和超能力，並開始地獄使者的任務。同時，他發現了愛妻雲達已改嫁他人，西蒙怨恨謀殺自己的兇手改變他一生，遂決定逮出兇手，找尋真相。

After being murdered by corrupt colleagues in a covert government agency, Al Simmons makes a pact with the devil to be resurrected to see his beloved wife Wanda. In exchange for his return to Earth, Simmons agrees to lead Hell's Army in the destruction of mankind.

As he begins to discover and exercise the extraordinary new strengths provided by his new malevolent master, he is approached by two mysterious figures. Cogliostro encourages Spawn to fight the devil and reign as a true champion for humankind, while Clown prods Spawn to lead the Armageddon. With nefarious players on either side, Spawn must carefully navigate his obsessive revenge to avert the destruction of the human race.
